Trailside Open House

Trailside Museum, 738 Thatcher Ave. in River Forest, will host "An Evening at Trailside," a special open-house style event on Friday, Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The free, family-friendly event features storytelling and s'mores around a campfire, glowing lantern craft and lantern parade, a flashlight hike and up-close encounters with animals.

Pumpkin party time 

Halloween is drawing nearer, which means it's time for decorating pumpkins. And the folks at McAdam Nursery and Garden Center, 2001 Desplaines Ave., will once again host their annual McAdam Pumpkin Party on Saturday, Oct. 21 from noon to 3 p.m.

The family-friendly event is free and open to kids of all ages. Have a sweet treat while joining in fun activities like hayrides, face painting, a pumpkin painting station and spooky stories.

The garden center is located a half mile south of Roosevelt Road on the west side of Harlem Avenue.

Cindy Lyons Health Fair 

Senior citizens and all other members of the community are invited to the annual Cindy Lyons Health Fair at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd. (at Desplaines Avenue) on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be more than 50 vendors at the event, providing information on senior care, home health care, hospice care, heart disease, tax appeals, phone services, Social Security and resources for seniors.

Representatives from the Illinois Treasurer's Office (Cash Dash), the Cook County State's Attorney, all village of Forest Park departments, the Cook County Sheriff, the Park District of Forest Park will also be on hand.

In addition, the Illinois Secretary of State will provide driver's license renewal vision screenings and attendees can avail themselves of a variety of free testing and exams, including cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, cataracts/glaucoma, hearing and more. Flu shots will be available from Rush Oak Park Hospital. All testing is free.

There will also be raffles and healthy food samples.

A 'spiritual' encounter

Centuries and Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St., will host an author discussion and book signing event on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

Meet and talk with Bonnie MacBird, who will be discussing her latest book Unquiet Spirits: Whisky, Ghosts, Murder. There may be some "spirits" on the premises.

The event is free to attend and open to the public.

Author event at library

Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd., hosts a book event with author Emilie Lucchesi on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

Lucchesi will discuss her book Ugly Prey: An Innocent Woman and the Death Sentence that Scandalized Jazz Age Chicago, which tells the story of Sabella Nitti, an Italian immigrant who in 1923 was sentenced to hang for the murder of her husband, despite scant evidence and no witnesses.
