Every year Forest Park Middle School pauses sometime in the month of February to pay tribute to Black History this month. This year, though, there were so many different ways and times that we stopped to recgonize the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans. Let's a take a moment or two to reflect on all the ways we honored those who have gone before and those who are currently forging ahead.

The 8th grade paid a visit to the DuSable Museum of African American History earlier this month and got to see close up some of the artifacts from the fight for freedom. The whole school participated in an assembly last week Friday that pointed out one very important truth: Black History is American History. Students then got the opportunity to delve a little deeper into different aspects of the African American culture and history in a series of mini-courses. Some dealt with food or dance, others with traditionally black colleges and businesses, other with spoken word, music and art. Students wrote poems echoing the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, updating his dreams of yesterday with their dreams of tomorrow.

And, finally, and most energetically, we celebrated African American culture with an assembly that explored the history of hip hop music and dance. Several of the students and teachers got a chance to show off their moves. It's been a wonderful celebration of accomplishments this year. Here's hoping we can keep up the momentum!
