Jerry Pelikan, head chef at Side Kick's restaurant in Forest Park, in the late 1980's won Forest Park RibFest in 1986 and 1987. His first place prize in 1986: a weekend for two at Pheasant Run resort.
Pelikan's ribs also took first place in the 1985 WLS-TV Best of Rib contest in Chicago and took third in Mike Ryoko's Rib contest in 1986.
According to a 1987 interview by the Forest Park Review, Pelikan attributed his success to his sauce. "I always like to put a little extra someting in my cooking."
His sauce is reported to have tomato base, cumin, nutmeg, black pepper, sometimes red pepper and rice vinegar.
In the annual Chamber of Commerce and Forest Park Review sponsored RibFest in 1988, Pelikan was temporarily not at Side Kicks, but that didn't stop Brin Polidaro, the new head cook to come out number one.
