Mayor Anthony Calderone said that if he is re-elected, he would favor appointing Deputy Police Chief Tom Aftanas to the post of police chief to replace Jim Ryan, who is retiring in May.

“He is well-groomed and I think he would be the best prepared,” Calderone said of Aftanas.

Calderone’s opponent, Village Commissioner Chris Harris, said “Tom Aftanas should be part of the discussion.”

The entire village council must approve the new police chief.

Aftanas, 47, has been on the Forest Park police force for 23 years and has served as deputy chief since May of 2006.
