The annual Chicago Headline Club Peter Lisagor Award finalists have been announced and Forest Park Review received a nomination in the category of best in-depth news coverage for a non-daily community newspaper.

The submission is for a series written in 2013 by Editor Jean Lotus about a patient death at Riveredge psychiatric hospital in Forest Park and the emergency and regulatory responses to the event.

The winners of the 37th annual awards will be announced Friday, May 2nd. A wide range of Chicago-area online, print and broadcast media are finalists again this year.

The Chicago Headline Club, the largest Society of Professional Journalists chapter in the country, established the Peter Lisagor Awards in 1977 to inspire Chicago-area journalists to follow Lisagor's outstanding example and to recognize truly superior contributions to journalism.

Peter Lisagor, the Chicago Daily News' Washington bureau chief from 1959 to 1976, was one of the nation's most respected and well-known journalists. Known for his precision and wit, Lisagor gained national recognition for his syndicated column and appearances on such public affairs broadcasts as "Meet the Press," "Face the Nation" and "Washington Week in Review" until his death in 1976.

They're all pulling double duty because of drastic budget cuts, Amber. People in the news business, especially non-union shops like WJ, Inc, are working their asses off trying to keep up, even as the Ignorati take silly little nit picking pot shots at them. Meanwhile the owners, who put their lives into this, are making next to nothing. Yet they still continue to produce award winning journalism. People like Tony Calderone can disparage that all they want. But quality journalism matters.

Anonymous signers even feel afraid to put their names to congratulatory comments! (Oh brother). I worked for FIeld Enterprises, 32 Divisions ~ 1973, when the Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times both were two of the 32, including TV channel 32. Typos galore haunt all the newspapers I read, including the NYT, because newspaper staffing AND entire departments were killed off across the country in 1982 (a bad recession) and steadily ever since. Where are all the copy editors and proofreaders now?

Congrats! It was a great series, and let me add that you put out a very impressive paper every week: wonderfully well-rounded, inclusive and hard-hitting when needed. Outstanding work that our town needs and appreciates.

How can this be, we have been told time and time again how lousy the writing is in the Review by certain people in town. Well, some of us know better, good job Jean.
