One of the new Common Core reading standards asks students to look at modern literature and compare it to its roots in fairy tales, mythology or the Bible. That is a difficult lesson to teach. However, the 6th grade ELA teachers are introducing Greek mythology to their students. They have spent the last few weeks reading, discussing and analyzing Greek Myth. The finished up their unit with reading the myth of Cupid and Psyche, rewriting the play in their own words or adding another scene and acting it out.
Now, the 6th graders are ready for those comparisons in seventh and eighth grade. They’re also ready to dive into the wonderful books by Rick Riordan, an author who specializes in modernizing Greek, Egyptian and now Norse mythology! Trust me, read the books they’re much better than the movies!
