The school year has begun. Again. As it has for hundreds of years at this time of year. As a kid I used to look forward to the first day of school. I think most kids do. It means seeing old friends who live too far away to see every day, it means meeting the new teachers, looking through those new readers and other textbooks.

For teachers it’s another story. In Chicago we had about 35 records for each kid. Records to study, file, keep up to date, lose and/or send on to the next teacher at the end of the year. At Grant White, faithful school secretary, Theresa Giglio is back on the job welcoming new teachers and greeting former ones. A good secretary and a good maintenance staff are important people in the school. Here are some new teachers at Grant White, Jennifer Paczosa, Tim Grivois, and Joellen Barone. Jennifer comes to us from Skinner and Medill schools in Chicago and will be teaching second grade. Tim will be teaching fourth grade and came from Our Lady of Tepeyac also in Chicago. Joellen Barone is fresh out of Dominican in River Forest and is no relation to the Barones who had the drug store on Harrison many years ago.

All by herself in the photo, is Sharon Urbauer,an old Forest Park name. Sharon will be teaching third grade and is a graduate of Saint Xavier University in Chicago. Best of luck in the coming year to all our teachers.

John Rice will be teaching bridge at the Community Center on Tuesdays beginning September 13 at 10:30 in the morning. This FREE “learn to play bridge” class is designed for beginners and those who are not really beginners. Registration is required and there is,as I said, no cost. Call 708-771-7737.

After class and before refreshments, Catherine Treiber usually reads a poem, prayer or thought for the day. Always interesting and inspirational. Come join the bridge players.
