Nobody was injured Tuesday night as four Canadian National Railway freight train cars derailed in Forest Park at about 7:45 p.m.

Two of the cars, according to Village Administrator Michael Sturino, were carrying propane and another was carrying a potentially dangerous plastic compound, but none of the hazardous materials leaked.

Madison Street
was completely blocked off for several hours after the accident, which occurred on the 7800 block near the Grove area, before cranes were sent in to lift the derailed cars.

Sturino said that a full fledged evacuation of residents in the area was not necessary.

He described the police and fire departments’ response as a best case scenario, crediting the village’s recent work revising its emergency response plan.

He said that an investigation was ongoing into the cause of the derailment.
