Chop a bun! Neighbors of Connie Bowlus will long remember her smile and hearty laugh. Although Connie and her daughter Carrie-Esther were Forest Parkers for 10 brief years, they won our hearts. Connie had a special magnetism about her, even in her long illness. Sympathy to her sons, Peter and Barry, and to her grandchildren.

Congratulations to former Review editor, Haydn Bush who has become engaged to marry Joy Seeburg.

You probably read of the death of TV personality, Mike Douglas a few weeks ago. What is never mentioned in the headlines is that Mike was Mike Dowd of Forest Park. Bob Dowd of Bob Dowd Field, where our baseball games are played, was the brother of Mike Dowd (Douglas). Mike??s sister-in-law was the late Eloise Down, known and loved by many Forest Parkers. Most villagers who would have remembered Mike Dowd are long gone. But there are still some nephews and a niece living in the area-Mary Hart of Oak Park for one. The late Auddie Doss was another niece. Also the Conways, Farrells, Gillians, Hemstreets, etc. knew him in the long-gone past.

Apologies to Anthony Bower. for misspelling his name last week. Vicki Panzani rescued a little runaway dog last week. The suspicious little fellow wouldn’t let Vicki look at his tags, but she cornered him, maneuvered him into her yard and phoned the police who connected finder with owner. It seems he had chewed his way through a pet-screen door. Not actually the screen-he just dislodged it from the frame.

Sympathy to the family of Michael Dudzik who was only 57 years old at the time of his death at West Suburban Hospital on July 22. He and Eve, his wife of 35 years, have lived in Forest Park for 29 of those years along with their children, David (Becky) and Christine (Gary Giannoni). The Dudziks have one granddaughter, Gwen.

As summer draws to a close, our pets seem to be afflicted by allergies, chewing difficulties, upset stomachs, etc. Here is a partial list of over-the-counter meds that can be safely or unsafely administered to pets. This list was given to me by a veterinarian:

  • Aspirin – Never to cats, OK for dogs;
  • Benadryl (for itching and allergies) – OK for dogs and cats;
  • Dramamine (motion sickness) – OK for dogs and cats;
  • Hydrogen peroxide (poison ingestion, induces vomiting) – OK for dogs and cats.

More next week. This computer refuses to type in KAOPECTATE in small letters. But it should never be given to cats; it’s OK for dogs. Cats are pretty sensitive to a lot of things. Best to consult a vet before giving anything.
