Candidates’ forum Thursday night

With just a few days left for voters to familiarize themselves with the issues, a community group is hosting several candidates seeking election next week. Citizens United in Forest Park expects each of the three park district candidates to take questions from the audience, and Fire Chief Steve Glinke will be on hand to discuss a referendum. Also invited are candidates in the District 209 school board race.

In the park district there is one six-year term on the ballot. District 209 has nine candidates vying for four four-year seats on the board. The referendum asks whether a $1 tax should be added to phone lines to pay for an upgrade in 911 technology.

There are also several township seats up for election.

The event will be held Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson. Local elections are Tuesday, April 7.

Annual hunger walk

To promote charitable giving in Forest Park, the village council recently proclaimed May 3 as “CROP Walk Day in Forest Park” in recognition of the annual event’s 26th year. The CROP Walk is a six-mile walk-a-thon in which participants raise money for local and international charities that provide food to the hungry. According to the council’s proclamation, the local event has donated more than $218,700 to a dozen food pantries in the area.

This year’s walk will be held May 3 and raises money for efforts in the tri-village area.
