During the second annual Record Store Day on April 18, customers browsed the shelves at The Old School Records on Madison where store owner Peter Gianakopoulos said the event brought out plenty of new faces. Across the globe, special releases helped pull crowds into independently owned stores. At The Old School Records, a 7-inch release of Bruce Springsteen was the most popular item of the day.

“I haven’t seen that kind of enthusiasm since the early to mid ’90s,” Gianakopoulos said of the music scene.

A lifelong fan of vinyl’s sound, Gianakopoulos said the surging popularity of records is likely due to nostalgia, smart marketing and a backlash to downloads.
