The big reunion day is almost here. If you don’t have your ticket for this Aug. 15 event at the Grove yet, get on over to Smokin’ M’s on Roosevelt and see Candy Doss. Pre luau, the price is $25. At the gate, $30. That wrist band entitles you to a day of eating, drinking, dancing and listening to great music and looking for old school friends. Your kids (free under age 12) will have fun in the bouncy house and other great kid activities. It promises to be a great day in Forest Park.
Congratulations to Terry Steinbach, who has achieved tenure at DePaul (and a raise).
There is an honest assistant manager at PetCo named Francisco Navedad. I would like to publicly thank Mr. Navedad for returning my wallet – with lots of money and some important cards – intact. Most people in this world are honest, I firmly believe that. But when you meet one face to face, it still kind of takes your breath away.
Pictured here is Myrna Wolf shopping locally at Ed’s Way. Myrna believes in supporting the local economy, and has for more than 45 years. She started shopping there when her son was 5 years old and the store was called White Way. Remember White Way? Some items may be a few cents more than they are at large chain stores, but the money you spend in town eventually gets back to you and Forest Park. The deli section has some unusual and really tasty items, such as bread pudding, egg salad and chicken salad. And you can pick up great values at the carts in the rear of the store. Nothing is outdated, just there for quick sale. No flowers, no balloons; just good fresh food. So listen to Myrna and shop locally.
On Saturday, Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. come join other animal lovers at The Spot Dog Lounge and Hotel. The Spot will host an adoption event for dogs and cats in conjunction with the Oak Park Animal Care League. To see a listing of adoptable dogs please visit www.AnimalCareLeague.org. That day may be one of the great events of your life if you should be lucky enough to find a new friend.
Lots of pet items are for sale at The Spot, such as unique dog collars made from recycled seat belts with hand sewn adornments.
On Sunday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m., Clio’s Chroniclers will discuss Zoo Keepers Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman. And keep in mind the next Meeting of Minds on Oct. 23. Actors John Kearney, Brenda Rossini, Geoff Garvey and Tracy Aleksy will play the roles of Sir George Williams, Frances Willard, Fr. Edward Flanagan, and Jane Addams. All of the above exciting activities will take place at Centuries & Sleuths, 7419 Madison. Call 771-7243 for more information.
