A new wood floor is being installed in the Forest Park Middle School gymnasium where, for decades, students have played on a urethane surface. Work began Thursday, Sept. 3 after school board members voted to hire a Woodstock company whose bid on the project came in at $72,115. Earlier this summer, an administrator for District 91 predicted the floor could cost as much as $150,000.
Replacing the worn surface of the gym floor was not a priority for the school board, but an unrelated effort to brace the walls of the gym was completed well ahead of schedule. Physical education classes were already scheduled to be held outdoors to accommodate the wall repairs, so board members voted to move ahead with the floor replacement. The new wood floor is expected to be finished by the fourth week of October.
