Eighth-graders at Forest Park Middle School are collecting pennies to donate toward a non-profit that purchases school supplies for students in Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to statement released by the school. From Oct. 5 to Nov. 5, students will gather as many pennies as possible to help children in remote mountain villages along the shared border.

According to middle school science teacher Jennifer Hays, a single cent is enough to purchase a pencil. A notebook can be bought for only 15 cents, and $600 is enough to pay a teacher’s salary. To donate to the program, contact Hays at the middle school, 925 Beloit, at 366-5742, or jhays@forestparkschools.org.
