May Bill got into another barroom brawl and fell off a barstool after some guy punched her in the eye. Well, anyway, that’s what it looked like. Actually, she was walking big, black Edgar Allan Poe, her daughter Janet’s shar pei “puppy” who weighs in at about 140 pounds. Edgar saw Janet and took off with all his might, dragging poor May with him. Janet and Gary rushed May to the hospital, much against her will, and guess what? She was fine. May is three quarters of the way through her 90th year. She will begin her 91st year in November.
Speedy get well wishes to former village council member Laureen Thornton, who was back in Oak Park Hospital as of this writing. Everyone wants her back among us expressing her strong opinions and keeping things moving.
The 600 block of Beloit held its annual block party last Saturday. The best cooks and bakers in town seem to be living there. As usual, Cliff Leber, back from his annual fishing vacation in Canada and Lake Erie, supplied freshly caught walleye and bass. Cliff catches them, cleans them and cooks them.
Belated happy birthday to 10-year-old Christian Harper who celebrated his birthday last Saturday, Aug. 21.
It’s not too late to sign up for knitting class at the library next Sunday, Aug. 29, 1 p.m. Hard to imagine, but soon we will be gathered around the fire trying to keep warm while icy storms rage outside. How comforting it will be to sit by that fire knitting a warm scarf for a loved one. Yarn and needles will be supplied by the library. But you must register so they know how many needles to order and how much yarn.
For the best in music, visit your local Lutheran Church. On Sunday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m., Friends of Music at St. John will host a concert of organ and trumpet music. Performers are all from Concordia University faculty. They are Steven Wente, organ, and John Burson, trumpet, assisted by Scott Ostannder, also on trumpet. Few things in life are as thrilling as the sound of a trumpet played in church. Admission is free, there’s plenty of parking, and there will be a reception following the concert. Everyone is invited. St. John is located at 305 Circle Avenue here in Forest Park.
