In 1706, William Jones, a self-taught mathematician from Wales selected the Greek letter to represent the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The world record for pi memorization was achieved in 2006 when Akira Haraguehi recited 100,000 digits from memory in over 16 hours. Pi has been computed with a calculator to contain more than one billion digits.

Congratulations to the actors at the Proviso Math and Science Academy who have been working hard on their upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors, which will be presented March 15 at 4 p.m. and March 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $8; students $5 and children under 5 are free. Another concert worth attending is the Oak Park Concert Chorale at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 W. Division Street in River Forest. Randall Thompson’s “The Peaceable Kingdom” will be presented on Sunday, April 29 at 4 p.m. This iconic work was inspired by an Edward Hicks painting of the same name.
