We remember Mike Caulfield. And it makes us proud when, 30 years after his death, his colleagues on the Forest Park police department honor his short service and his ultimate sacrifice.

Last Saturday, the department’s color guard and other officers gathered with his family at his grave in Hillside. It was the anniversary of the horrifying shooting spree inside the police station that ended in Officer Caulfield’s death at the hands of a suspect who had grabbed another officer’s gun. Forest Park officers ultimately killed the suspect, Orin Dominguez.

That shooting led to changes in procedures within the department that are now common practice across police agencies. But we’ll take this moment to remember the positive and determined young cop who came to Forest Park and to honor today’s Forest Park police officers.
