Proviso Math and Science Academy will host its first open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Families can learn about the program, tour the facility and meet faculty, staff and students.

PMSA, 8601 W. Roosevelt Rd., was recently ranked by Chicago Magazine as among Illinois’ “Top 20 public high schools in Cook County.” According to the magazine, the school had 739 students and a zero percent drop-out rate.

The school was also noted for having 45.3 percent low-income students and average ACT scores of 21.5. Among Cook County high schools listed, PMSA spent the least amount per pupil: roughly $7,500, as compared to Niles North High School, which spends roughly $12,500.

The Forest Park magnet high school draws students from 10 Proviso Township feeder towns. Enrollment is by application and a two-in-a-half hour admission exam on non-verbal ability, plus a written essay. The application is found on the Proviso website:  www.pmsa.pths209.org.

Other open house dates are scheduled for Nov. 15 and Dec. 11. Admission exams take place at 9 a.m. on Oct. 27, Nov. 3 and 10, Dec. 1 and 8.
