After more than a year on the run, Carol Mix, of Maywood, was taken into custody in Waterloo, Iowa, on Nov. 27 and extradited to Forest Park. Mix is a suspect in the February 2011 evening attack of a 71-year-old Oak Park woman in the Ultra Foods parking lot at 7520 Roosevelt Rd.
Police said the shopper was stalked through the store by Mix, 56, and two men — her younger brother Robert Mix, 55, and Kenny Hollyfield, 54 both of Addison.
The three followed the woman to the parking lot around 6 p.m. on Feb. 11 and tried to take her purse as she was putting groceries into the car, said Forest Park Police Chief Jim Ryan.
“[The victim] resisted the attempt to take the purse and she was knocked to the ground and one male offender began kicking her in the head,” said Ryan. The victim’s eye, face and arm were seriously injured. She underwent surgery for a broken eye socket and extensive dental reconstruction.
On the Ultra Foods surveillance video, the trio was observed following the woman through the store as if they were stalking her with “no intention to purchase anything,” Ryan said.
The two men were apprehended in March 2011. Hollyfield was named as the primary attacker who stomped the victim. He was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated battery to a senior citizen, attempted first-degree murder and attempted robbery. Robert Mix was charged with aggravated battery to a senior citizen and attempted robbery. Those cases are still pending and the next court date is Dec. 7 at the Maybrook courthouse.
Carol Mix fled to Iowa and then Wisconsin, then returned to Iowa, according to Forest Park police. She was arrested and held at Blackhawk County Jail in Waterloo and waived extradition. Forest Park police brought her back to Forest Park on Nov. 30 and charged her with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a senior citizen. Bond was set at $50,000.
Her initial court date will be Dec. 6 at the Maybrook courthouse, a Forest Park police press release said.
“[Forest Park] Detective Jarlath Haveran worked like a dog with a bone on this case and wouldn’t give up,” said Ryan. “He was relentless and he found [Mix] out in Iowa.”
