Just down the road from Forest Park, but largely out of all of our minds, is the Hines Veterans Hospital. And within Hines is the Fisher House, simply described in our news coverage this week, as “a Ronald McDonald House for adults.” Fisher House offers the families of veterans receiving care at Hines a welcoming and affordable place to stay during stress-filled days.
For the third holiday season, kind adults and generous children from Grant-White School are connecting our town with the families of veterans being treated at Hines. The kids have been collecting toiletries and other small items and placing them in 75 lovingly decorated bags for delivery to Fisher House.
Helping our children learn the joy and the necessity of giving is an important part of the school experience. What we like most here, though, is that this isn’t a giant and anonymous Toys-for-Tots experience. Here our kids learn not only about the need to help others but they also come to see the real people, the real need they are filling with their gifts.
