Proviso Township High School District 209 raised the pay of administrators district-wide at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

The district has been collecting data from other school districts to “determine if Proviso administrators were underpaid for their respective roles,” a report presented to the board said.

The board approved a recommendation to adjust upward all administrator salaries to be within a new series of ranges presented by Supt. Nettie Collins-Hart.

Business managers and assistant superintendent’s salaries bumped up 3 percent to a range between $131,000 – $142,000. Principals were boosted 2.9 percent to a pay range of $127,700 – $139,000. Associate principals, IT directors and special services directors had their pay range increased by 3.0 percent to $114,300- $126,000 and assistant principals, directors of accounting and athletic directors were bumped up to a salary range of $109,200 – $121,500, around 2.9 percent.

The report recommended adjusting base salaries for administrators who were paid less than the new pay range in an amount not to exceed $10,000. The payments will be retroactive to July 2012.

Collins-Hart has complained about turnover and the salaries needed to attract top-quality candidates for administrative positions.

In the past year, several top administrators resigned, including the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Cheryl Pruitt, Special Education Director Marianne Fidishin, Senior Athletic Director Milton Patch and Finance Director Romanier Polley.

The temporary finance director hired to replace Polley, Diane McCluskey resigned March 15.

According to the Illinois Interactive Report Card, the average 2012 pay of a high school administrator statewide is $110,870.

The board also approved a measure to boost Department Chair stipends over a four year term by between $800-$1,200 depending on how many teachers he/she supervised.

The average pay of the 239 teachers at Proviso is $63,315 for a teacher with 12.7 years of experience according to the Illinois Interactive Report Card. The average pay statewide for a teacher with 12.9 years experience is $66,614.

Starting teachers at Proviso with no experience earn around $43,000.
