A Bellwood man has been charged with reckless homicide after the vehicle he was driving struck and killed an Oak Park man crossing Harlem Avenue early Saturday morning.

Oak Park police charged Michael D. Campbell, 21, of the 500 block of Morris Avenue in Bellwood in the death of 22-year-old Christopher R. Swordy of the 800 block of South Clinton Avenue in Oak Park.

Police said Swordy and two friends were crossing Harlem eastbound at Jackson Boulevard around 3:10 a.m. when he was struck and killed by the car driven by Campbell, which was traveling northbound on Harlem. Swordy’s two companions were not injured.

Oak Park police stopped Campbell and took him into custody within minutes of the accident in the 1100 block of Madison Street. Campbell registered a blood alcohol content of .172, more than twice the legal limit of .08. He was charged with DUI, reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and other driving violations.

Campbell is being held in Cook County jail pending bond.
