When we think of our cops we are more likely to think of traffic violations and sorting out bar room fights than anything else. And then something like the gruesome early Saturday morning DUI crash on the Ike takes place and it is worth our considering the Forest Park police officers who rushed to that scene – one officer saw it take shape as a drunk driver blithely headed down the exit ramp at Harlem and straight into oncoming traffic.

We’ll never know what it is like to confront such a scene – a vehicle on fire, bodies trapped, arresting an unscathed drunk. Deputy Police Chief Tom Aftanas described the scene as “horrific.” But it is worth pausing to consider and to thank the police officers and fire and ambulance personnel who ably faced that moment.
