Steve Thomas

The Park District of Forest Park has hired an assistant director.

Steve Thomas, formerly recreation superintendent in Clarendon Hills for seven years, was hired by the district in October. His salary is $63,000, said parks Director Larry Piekarz.

Thomas, who lives in Western Springs, fills a post that replaces the vacant superintendent of recreation position which has remained open since June, Piekarz said.

“Steve is my assistant but will also supervise everything at The Park,” Piekarz said.

Thomas has worked in the parks and recreation field for more than 24 years, a statement from the park district said.

He majored in recreational business management at Elmhurst College and received a Master of Science in Administration of Leisure Services degree from Aurora University in 1996, according to the park district. He’s certified by both the National Recreation and Park Association and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association.

He has experience overseeing a community center, as well as outdoor recreation and pool areas, and served as a board member for a special recreation association. He also has experience with local sports organizations, the park district said.
