Forest Park police have charged a 21-year-old Berwyn man in the hit-and-run accident June 1 that killed Forest Park bicyclist Jeffrey A. Schulz.
Joel Mendoza, of the 2600 block of Clarence Avenue, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and failure to reduce speed.
Mendoza was driving a blue 2000 Honda Accord belonging to a relative when he allegedly struck Schultz, 40, around 10:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Harlem Avenue. Schultz was declared dead at the scene.
Schultz had been watching the Blackhawks game at a Berwyn pub before heading home to his two-flat in the 1400 block of Elgin Avenue, his friend said.
Mendoza left the scene, police said, and the vehicle was found, abandoned, in Berwyn at 15th Street and Clinton Avenue. Broken-off pieces of the vehicle matched front-end damage on the Accord, police said.
Mendoza was transported to the Maybrook Courthouse on June 5 for a bond hearing.
