Our community’s sixth annual Juneteenth Family Pool Party was a big success on many levels. We had adult guests from throughout Cook County who came to observe the event because they heard that Forest Park observes Juneteenth. Congressman Danny Davis (a native of Arkansas) returned to our event and made public comments praising the Park District for hosting the children and families, and generally praising Forest Park.  Also in attendance and showing support were village officials and park district trustees from our neighbor to the west, as well as Cook County Commissioner-Elect Richard Boykin.

We entertained and educated over 400 children and their families, despite the surprisingly cool night, thanks to our volunteers and the following sponsors:   Park District of Forest Park, Forest Park National Bank, Ultra Foods, Mohr Oil, Currie Motors, Riveredge Hospital, Walgreens, Storino, Ramello & Durkin, Ferrara Pan Candy, Kiwanis, Leonard Creative Works, and The Review.  Valuable raffle items were donated by McDonalds of Forest Park, Shanahan’s, and anonymous donors.  Forest Park Historical Society President Bob Cox and other historical society board members also came to support the event.

The cliché that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery is applicable because officials from Maywood have invited members of our town to participate in their town’s First Annual Juneteenth Family Cookout that will be held this coming Saturday near their town’s Fred Hampton Aquatic Center (starts mid-day June 21).

Finally, we wish to thank the volunteers and a few key individuals who made special contributions: Park District Board President Eric Entler, Commissioner Tom Mannix (who donated and personally distributed ice cream), Commissioner Chris Harris, and District 91 Board member Sean Blaylock.
