Melrose Park, Ill. (September 2, 2014) –Thanks to generous grant funding, Westlake Hospital is again offering free screening mammograms during the entire month of October to women residing in the following towns located in Proviso Township: Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Forest Park, Hillside, Maywood, Melrose Park, Stone Park and Westchester. Every year in which Westlake Hospital has been able to extend this offer, hundreds of women have been able to take advantage of the life-saving screenings.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just over 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2013, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 64,640 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

Eligible women are able to schedule a free screening mammogram, regardless of insurance status and without any co-payment or out of pocket expense. Residents of the specified towns must be age 40 or older or over the age of 35 with a strong family history of breast cancer and have not had a previous mammogram within the last year. Mammogram appointments will be available six days a week with some evening appointments available. Appointments must take place by October 31 to qualify for this special offer.

“We are fortunate to receive this grant funding again this year to offer these life-saving screenings in this community,” says Stephen Smith, M.D., Chairman and Medical Director, Department of Medical Imaging at Westlake Hospital. “We know that screening mammography is able to detect cancer at an early stage; therefore improving chances of survival”.
