For the past five years we have been holding a softball tournament and picnic here in Forest Park with the sole purpose of raising funds for severely injured soldiers returned from war. Too often these heroes are coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq with injuries and conditions that will change their lives forever, Wounded Warrior Project is dedicated to helping these brave men and women with a variety of programs.

This Saturday, Oct. 11, I hope you can please stop by the Park District and have a beer and a bite to eat and know that those profits are going to help. Also take a look at the banners and names of the sponsors who have generously supported the event for years and frequent them with the satisfaction of knowing they care about this worthy cause. The beer and food tents open at 11 a.m. and at noon we will have a ceremony to honor these heroes. Mayor Calderone will give a short speech, the colors will be presented and the national anthem proudly sung. I hope you can take some time out of your busy schedule to show your support and, if you can, stick around for a while as there are a couple of bands playing later and the beer will be flowing all day.

Lastly, there is another worthy charity event in town taking place on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 3-5 p.m. at Healy’s, a pig roast,  to benefit Misericordia.  Misericordia does great work helping children and adults with developmental disabilities so hopefully you can find time to stop at both events!
