For five years we have been raising money for injured heroes who are sent off to war and return with major injuries that forever change their lives. Every fall we hold a tournament and fundraiser. Sponsorship from area businesses grows every year, people asking if they can help out grows every year, and the ceremony honoring our Veterans grows as well.
This year with the help of Mike Roti and Frank Amaro we were blessed with participation from the Schurz JROTC Drum Corps, the Proviso JROTC Jr. Navy, The Forest Park Honor Guard, The Italian American War Vets, The Berwyn Combined War Vets, as well as Forest Park’s VFW & American Legion which really created a great atmosphere where Mayor Calderone delivered a warm and reflective speech.
Sponsors and volunteers really need a thank you and that starts with Karen Dylewski and her selfless actions, Amy Rita’s graphic art efforts and Marty Tellalian’s physical and fiscal help with the police presence. Sound, scoring and grill and beverage support from: Bill & Veronica Gerst, Mary Rueda, Steve Knysch, Mom Brivitch, Mike Jones, Mike Reidy, Amber Taconna and Chalk’s entire crew. Larry Piekarz and the entire Park District Board and staff have given us a home for years and it’s fantastic that we can do this in our welcoming town.
Big thanks to the businesses who step up every year: R Place, Matt O’Shea, Shortstop Lounge, FatDuck Tavern, Mohr Oil, MSS, Currie Motors, McGaffer’s and Dan Hurt at Consolidated Auto, who has supported the event for years and who we were sad to learn has sold his business. Thank you Dan and thank you all for your support in honoring these heroes!
