On Opening Day, the Mohr Oil Maroons took on the visiting hillside Braves. The Maroons are in the Minor Boys division for 9-10 year-olds but they do have one girl, Mayan Covarrubias, playing 3rd Base. Hillside jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning and never looked back. The final was Hillside over Forest Park 21-13. There were some bright spots, though, for the Maroons. Nathan Canada got a hit, while playing 1st Base and catcher. He even pitched an inning. Curtis Horras also showed versatility playing center field and catcher. Max Russ was an effective relief pitcher, played shortstop and collected a hit. Manager Ryan Russ said, “We have 17 kids on our team. We’ve played three games. During each game, I saw that someone had improved. We’re going to continue to have fun and get it done.”
