Field-Stevenson is ending the year with an all-school book club called One School, One Book. Each student received a copy of Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan and was asked to read it at home with their family. Reading is essential for academic success, so parents are encouraged to read the book along with their student.
The book, The One and Only Ivan, is inspired by a true story of a gorilla caged alone for twenty-seven years in a shopping mall. It is a touching story that everyone can relate to, no matter their age. Reading Specialist, Mr. Cushing kicked the project off by reading to and discussing the first 50 pages of the book with the students. Each Thursday, a new trivia question will be revealed and students will have a chance to submit their answer Friday morning to be entered in a weekly raffle. Field-Stevenson hopes to engage students and their families as they promote a shared reading experience within the school community.
