Our 1st graders are “Bugging Out!” Several times each year the first grade at Betsy invites parents to help with fun theme days. The most recent came after a thematic unit on insects, during which the students learned about various insects and their traits and life cycles, raised caterpillars that have recently emerged as butterflies, and carried over their work in the other academic areas.
Integrated units like this help students to not only learn about a science concept, but motivate them to improve their reading, writing, and math! For the culminating theme day, the students “bugged out” with hats, made “dirt” (complete with worms!) to eat, sorted insect traits, made theme related compound words, created life cycle diagrams, and had a phenomenal morning of learning and fun with the many parent helpers who made this day possible.
Thank you to all of the parents, and thank you to the students for your great work and enthusiasm!
