Thank you to the sponsors and volunteers who contributed to the 7th annual Juneteenth Family Pool Party. A great time was had by many Forest Park families, and by visitors to our community, despite the cool weather and the change in date.
On behalf of the volunteers who have consistently worked to produce the event, “Thank You” to staff at District 91 for helping educate our students and the community about the Juneteenth tradition.
A heartfelt thanks goes out to the following sponsors: Park District of Forest Park, Forest Park National Bank, Ultra Foods, Mohr Oil, Currie Motors, David King and Associates, Kiwanis Club of Forest Park, Leonard Creative Works, Wells Fargo, and the Forest Park Review.
Special thanks to commissioners Joe Byrnes and Rachell Entler, and generally to other village staff who helped get the word out.
Finally, thanks to the park district’s team, led by Steve Thomas, for helping to make the event safe and enjoyable. Given the recent tragedy in South Carolina and calls for the removal of certain Civil War-era symbols, it is painfully clear that symbols do matter.
Our country continues to struggle on many levels with the legacy of slavery and the aftermath of the Civil War. It is a remarkable symbolic gesture for our community to have embraced the Juneteenth tradition.
