Vehicle burglar leaves credit cards, sticks to cash

On June 30 around 6:30 p.m., a woman parked her black 2014 Volkswagen Jetta on the 7700 block of Adams Street. The next morning, she discovered her car had been burglarized. A leather purse containing five credit cards and $20 cash were reported missing. However, a 43-year-old neighbor called the police department to say she found a black purse in the rear of her garage. All items were recovered except the $20 cash.

On June 30 around 5:30 p.m., a 47-year-old woman parked her husband’s 2008 black Honda Element on the 7700 block of Adams Street but forgot to close a passenger window. The next morning, she discovered a black bag, containing an Apple iPad, missing from the car.

On the morning of July 1, a 40-year-old man discovered his 2013 Hyundai Elantra had been broken into while parked overnight on the 7700 block of Adams Street. No items were reported missing. 

Motor vehicle theft

On June 28 around 11 p.m., a 40-year-old man parked his 2012 Mazda 3 in a rear carport on the 200 block of Rockford Street. The next morning, he discovered the car had been stolen along with $200 worth of carpenter and electrical tools that were inside the vehicle. The man told authorities he might have left the car unlocked with a separate set of keys inside. 

Stolen vehicle recovered

Police have charged a 17-year-old boy with one count of felony burglary, one count of felony criminal damage to property and one count of misdemeanor attempted theft.

On July 1 around midnight, police found an abandoned 2003 red Chrysler minivan on the 7700 block of West Harvard Street. The Chicago Police Department had reported the car stolen on June 30.

A resident of an adjacent building told officers he had seen two men exit the minivan, check door handles of a few nearby cars and then flee. While searching the area, officers saw two men exit a nearby Dodge minivan. Seeing the approaching officers, the men began to run. A chase ensued that ultimately ended when the 17-year-old was found hiding under a car parked in the Forest Automotive lot, 950 Desplaines Ave. 

Burglary from a motor vehicle

A 38-year-old man was unloading a few items from his car on June 21 around 1:30 a.m. on the 600 block of Grove Lane. Noticing papers strewn on the floor of the car upon returning to his unlocked 2009 black Range Rover, he realized someone had rifled through the car. The man did not report the  burglary until June 29 when he realized his gym bag, containing a silver Ulysse Nardin Quadrato watch, Kliph headphones and golf equipment, totaling over $10,000, were missing. 

Bike thefts

A 32-year-old woman reported her son’s black Mongoose 24-inch bike had been stolen while locked up at 7501 Harrison Street on June 30 sometime between 6 and 8 p.m. The boy had secured his bike with a combination lock at a nearby bike rack, but it appeared the thief was able pick the lock.

An 18-year-old DeKalb man has been charged with one count of theft after stealing a bike left outside the CVS, 7216 Circle Ave., on July 1 around 4:30 p.m. The bike’s owner, a 50-year-old Oak Park man, gave chase as the thief fled and eventually recovered the bike.

A 23-year-old man reported that his $700 matte black Trek bike, which was unlocked, was stolen from a fenced-in courtyard at 7446 Madison St. The theft occurred around 6 p.m. on July 1. 

Battery

A 22-year-old Chicago man has been charged with one count of battery and one count of resisting arrest. A second man, a 24-year-old from Maywood, has also been charged with one count of battery. 

On July 4 around 9:30 p.m., a 43-year-old man was standing on the CTA platform, 1 Harlem Ave., when his cane fell off the platform and landed below on the sidewalk. The 22-year-old and the 24-year-old were standing nearby and picked up the cane. A fight broke out after the 43-year-old attempted to get his cane back. The man was taken to Oak Park Hospital for cuts on his face and lip. 

 Possession of a controlled substance

Alleece Day, 26, of LaSalle has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. On July 5 around 10 p.m., the 2014 Nissan Sentra that Day was riding in was stopped on the 600 block of Harlem Avenue. A search of the vehicle revealed 1.1 grams of heroin and .1 grams of crack cocaine. Another passenger, a 41-year-old LaSalle man was also charged with one count of possession of drug equipment. 

 These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 29 to July 5, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
