Each year, the first grade students at Betsy Ross study apples. The students learn about the different parts of apples, how and where they grow, and American cultural traditions surrounding apples, like the story of Johnny Appleseed.
One activity that Mrs. Perry’s class is always the most excited for is making applesauce. Mrs. Perry brings in her crock pot and ingredients, and the students watch and help as she prepares the treat. The students have the chance to observe and examine the different parts of the apple that they have been learning about. They discuss how the different ingredients will change the taste and smell of the applesauce. Once the applesauce is cooked, the students will have the chance to make observations of the final product using all 5 senses, recording their results. Their favorite part is always the taste test!
