This quarter, the 8th graders at Forest Park Middle School are reading Fallen Angels by celebrated African American young adult writer Walter Dean Myers. Myer’s gritty tale plunges students into the end of 1968 as it follows Richard Perry, a 17 year old enlisted man, into the jungles of Vietnam. While studying Vietnam the students learned about the history of the war and the country and the dangers. One of the dangers our American soldiers had to face was the threat of the disease malaria. It was a surprise to the students that malaria is still a disease that threatens large areas of the world today.

According to statistics, every 60 seconds someone dies from malaria somewhere in the world. Of those who die from malaria 77% are children under the age of 5. Therefore, the 8th graders have decided to raise money for Nothing But Nets. Nothing But Nets is a non profit agency that provides mosquito netting to families where malaria still rages. Only $10 will purchase a net that will cover an entire family of 5.

All 8th grade ELA classes are raising money in their classrooms. We also have an online donation site. If you would like to contribute, please send money along with your 8th grader to donate in the classroom or donate through the website. No donation is too small.
