Eighth Grade Challenge Program students visited Argonne National Laboratory on Wednesday, February 10th to work with students from IMSA (Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy) on a special project.

During this time, students discovered the phenomenon of Wicked Problems by looking at the spread of infectious disease.  To best describe infectious disease, students from IMSA guided the eighth graders implementing a variety of modeling techniques and see both the big picture and small details of the situation.   Along the way, they discovered how perspective changes perceived solutions, and how no one modeling technique is complete.
