At Betsy Ross, the teachers know that children learn best when they’re motivated, and what better motivation is there than a fun game? Our first graders have already been working hard to learn “Memory Words,” also known as sight words- these are words you know by sight without having to sound them out. Knowing these words by memory can make reading easier and more fluent. To practice these words, Mrs. Halliwell’s class tried out a new game this week- fishing for memory words. The students loved it!

The “fish” are magnetic word cards, caught with a fishing pole- a ruler with string and a paper clip. It’s a simple game, but the children loved every minute of it, having a great time playing with their friends while they practiced their words. Any time Betsy teachers can combine learning and playing with friends, the results are always fantastic!
