Students at Grant-White are receiving amazing instruction and guidance from our math coach, Mr. McElligott. Mr. McElligott interviewed each student individually for math fact fluency using guidelines from the MCMI (Metro Chicago Math Initiative). Students were assessed on fact expectations from the previous year to find baseline data. This data will be used to inform instruction in the classroom. The assessment focused on accuracy as well as flexibility (the ability to use the properties of multiplication to help solve facts you may not know).
These interviews give us a chance to see how our students are making sense of the numbers presented to them. Students who use the properties of operations to help them learn number facts have a great advantage in that they understand the important ideas of mathematics and can use this understanding to solve more complex problems throughout their schooling and throughout their lives.
