May the circle be unbroken. They’ve been holding hands for 53 years! Ever since their wedding in November 1963. You see these two lovebirds walking together every day, Cathy and Jim Thompson. Jim walks Cathy to her corner at Jackson & Thomas, then he goes back to his corner at Madison & 2nd at Maternity BVM on North Avenue in Chicago. Daughter Jill is an artist married to a writer. Son Steve is living in Florida. Congratulations to a charming couple, loved by all who know them.

“He who plants a tree plants a hope.” So goes the famous poem by Lucy Larcom. Last Friday, Patrick Scollard, Forest Park arborist, along with fellow workers Paul Richards, Patrick Braniff and Mike Marasco left their mark on the future by planting a linden tree on the 400 block of Ferdinand. Forest Parkers of the future will look upon the tree, have their lungs cleaned by its leaves; birds, squirrels and who knows what all will make their homes in it. Hot summer days will be made cooler by its leaves. All because of a few hours’ work by Tim, Paul, Patrick and Mike. You have immortalized yourself by planting a tree! The world thanks you.

Don’t walk down the 500 block of Thomas at night unless you are very brave. The Urbans are at it again. They summoned up their creepy friends to move in until Halloween. Thank heaven that really spooky old witch didn’t come back. And the slowly moving spider scared my dog. He kept barking at it and backing away. I’m warning you … it is really scary on that street.

See you at Saint Bernardine’s pancake breakfast this Saturday. Crafts, bake sale, it’s all going to be there, along with your friends and neighbors, from 8:30 until 1 p.m.

Also, we’ll see each other at the Historical Society’s Mysteries of the Haymarket Time Capsule presentation. That’s Oct. 27 from 7 until 10 p.m. Archaeologists have been searching for a time capsule that was buried in 1892. Join Mark Rogovin, Bleue Benton, Larry Spivak, Chris Fitzgerald and Rebecca Graff at 1000 Elgin (First United Church) as they discuss this historic event. $30 entry, free for current HSP members.
