Forest Park police officers arrested John Scudieri, a 64-year-old Maywood resident, July 6 on First Avenue just south of Madison Street around 2 p.m., according to Police Chief Thomas Aftanas, for the robbery of U.S. Bank, 7525 Madison St., on June 29.
Officers saw Scudieri “talking with someone” and stopped him, Aftanas said. He was turned over to the FBI and charged with one count of felony bank robbery.
Aftanas told the Review one of his officers recognized Scudieri after the department released images from the robbery. The officer, Aftanas said, knew Scudieri from a previous arrest one year ago.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court’s Northern District of Illinois on July 6, Scudieri stole $3,118, in a “non-takeover” robbery, meaning he did not take hostages or attract attention during the incident.
Scudieri, according to the complaint, entered U.S. Bank around 11 a.m. and walked up to a teller. He did not say anything but slid a note, handwritten in black ink on a notecard, across the counter toward the teller.
“This is a robbery. Don’t pull any alarms. Give me the cash,” the note reportedly read.
In the complaint, Scudieri reportedly admitted to robbing the bank, claiming he was addicted to heroin and that he robbed the bank because he needed the money.
