History Discussion Meeting
Discuss historian David Halberstam’s The Coldest Winter at 2 p.m. at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St., on Jan. 28. Hablerstam won the Pulitzer Prize at age 30 for his work reporting on the Vietnam War. His last 14 books were all New York Times bestsellers.
Sisters in Crime Meeting
The Chicago chapter’s new president, author Patricia Skalka, will talk to the all-woman writing club’s members about paths to publication. What writing goals do you have for 2018? The nonprofit Chicago Area Alternative Education League will host its 16th annual Battle of the Bands fundraiser at 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at Healy’s Westside, 7321 Madison St. Attendees’ $40 ticket includes draft beer, soda, wine, appetizers, live music, a raffle, silent auction, door prizes and more.
