Explore Forest Park: Empowering Gardens

Join officials from the Forest Park Public Library in touring nonprofit Empowering Gardens’ garden center, and learn how to identify, control and get rid of garden pests. Tour runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on August 11 at Empowering Gardens, 7730 W. Madison St.  

Movies in the Park

Grab a blanket, snacks and enjoy a free screening of “Wonder Woman” on the front lawn of the Park District of Forest Park. The screening will start at dusk, between 7:45 and 8:30 p.m., on August 10 at 7501 Harrison St. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Courageous Women of the Vietnam War with Kathryn Atwood

Local author Kathryn Atwood will read and her discuss her latest book “Courageous Women of the Vietnam War,” a collection of biographies that feature women who made courageous choices in the midst of war and occupation. Reading runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on August 15 at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd. 

St. John Corn Boil

Enjoy free sweet corn, watermelon, hot dogs and more at the St. John Corn Boil from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on August 11 at the St. John Community Gardens, 7422 Warren St. Call 708-366-3226 for more information.

Pig Roast

Pig out at the ninth Pig Roast benefitting the TK Camp Fund, a fundraiser for children who suffer from Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. $40 ticket buys unlimited food and drinks. Walk the town and take in art during the fifth Garage Galleries, where neighbors turn their garages into galleries that showcase local artists wares. Walk runs from 2 to 7 p.m. on August 25. ACT and SAT Diagnostic Testing 

Officials from Sylvan Learning Academy will help you get prepared for college entrance exams with a free diagnostic testing sessions and feedback on what skills you need to brush up on. Testing runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on August 11 at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd. 

Author Discussion and Signing with Paul Teodo

Attend a talk and reading with Paul Teodo, who read a section from his new book “Pastaman,” a coming-of-age novel about an Italian boy growing up on the south side of Chicago. Talk runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on August 12 at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St. 

Tai Chi Qigong

Instructor Mari Morales will teach those 15 and older this ancient Chinese form of exercise from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday through August 14 at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St. 

Tennis 

Instructors from Skyline Athletes Staff will teach those 14 and older the basics of tennis from 10 to 11 a.m. every Saturday through August 23 at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St.
