Bruce Rauner

Republican Governor Bruce Rauner made an impromptu visit to the village’s annual Ribfest on Sept. 8 at the Forest Park Picnic Grove, 7824 W. Madison St.

“We had an awesome afternoon at Ribfest in Forest Park; it was great to meet everyone,” he tweeted after the event, posing for selfies with residents and, we assume, munching on some of the area’s finest ribs.

The incumbent governor is up for re-election on Nov. 6, and faces a challenge from Democratic Party candidate J.B. Pritzker, Libertarian Party candidate Kash Jackson, and Conservative Party candidate and state Sen. Sam McCann.

Illinois’ gubernatorial election is proving to be one of the most expensive races in history, with the Pritzker campaign dropping $54 million into the race from January through the end of June, according to state records. During that same time frame, Rauner spent $25.5 million.

If the billionaire, self-funded Democrat and near-billionaire Republican top the $200 million mark in combined spending, they would break records, making the 2018 governor’s race the most expensive in state history, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
