Music with a twist
What do recorders, harmonicas, drums and accordions have in common? When it comes to music, they make very odd pairings. Hear Klezmer, blues, tango, swing and more like you’ve never heard it before as the Forest Park Arts Alliance brings you Stoop Session #3 featuring the Fleur de Chanson Recorder Trio with guest John Milan on Monday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at 540 Ferdinand Ave.
The event is free and open to the public.
Mystery author at Centuries & Sleuths
Century & Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St., hosts a discussion and book signing featuring Mark Pryor, a native of England and now an Austin, Texas, resident, Travis County assistant district attorney and mystery author. He’ll be discussing “The Book Artist,” the eighth and latest novel in his Hugo Marston series. Free and open to the public.
Movie nights for kids
The Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St., hosts a pair of movie nights for kids in the coming week.
The park district kicks off its Friday Fun Night Movie series for kids ages 5 to 12 on Friday, Sept. 13 from 6:15 to 8 p.m. at Building 4. The cost is $5 per child (pre-register or at the door). The park district will host a Tween/Teen Movie Night for fifth-through eighth-graders on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Roos Recreation Center, 7329 Harrison St. The gym will be open and pizza, popcorn and beverages will be served while kids watch a PG or PG-13 film. Camp under the stars
Pitch a tent and spend the night under the stars as the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St., turns its softball fields into a campground on Sept. 14-15. Enjoy a hot dog and baked beans dinner then roast marshmallows before watching a late-night movie in the outdoor theater. The campout will conclude the following morning with breakfast. The event is for families only. Parents must accompany children. Families can set up their campsites any time after 2 p.m. on Sept. 14. Activities start at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per family/tent (limit 6). Each additional person is $8. For more info or to register online, visit www.pdofp.org.
Library programs continue offsite
Despite much of the Forest Park Public Library being closed while renovations are completed, its programming continues offsite. For kids, there’s Babybugs Lapsit Storytime at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday; Toddler Storytime on at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays; Hello Amigos! Storytime on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 11; Merry Math Makers Storytime on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 12; and Exploration Station Storytime on Fridays at 10:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 13. All storytime programs will be at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd. Other programs include Hungry Tweens Meetup on Sept. 12 at 4:15 p.m. at Sugarbeet Schoolhouse, 349 Ashland Ave. in River Forest.; Classic Film Fridays on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd.; Genealogy Meetup on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St.; and Celebration of Reading on Sept. 17 at noon at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd.
