A group of climate activists whose day job is attending Field Stevenson School made a strong case last week to the District 91 school board that plastic straws have to go.
It was impressive and it was heartening to listen to these well-prepared students lay out the range of dangers created by our profligate use of straws — is it really possible that Americans average 1.6 straws per day?! Ocean pollution, danger to sea life from plastic, alternatives for those who rely on straws — these students had the topic covered.
Kudos to Principal Tiffany Brunson for encouraging her students to bring their case to the school board. Nice work by Supt. Louis Cavallo in saying the district will “do whatever we can to get rid of those straws.” Mostly, though, appreciation and respect to these third-graders for taking action for our planet.
