It’s true that for many years the Chinese accepted shiploads of our unsorted recycling so we never had to give a second thought to what we threw away. But now they are refusing to accept our unsorted and often contaminated “recycling.” Throwing all the items we now do into a single bin is not recycling and our unthinking trashing of whatever we choose in one bin is no longer feasible. I’m glad the village leaders are waking up to this real problem. It’s unfortunate that a bunch of schoolkids are embarrassing the rest of us into really revisiting how we can better care for our planet — and their future.
