The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is working on a $46 million pump station project on I-290, on the south side of the expressway, west of the Desplaines Avenue exit and immediately west of the Desplaines River.
The project, which began on Jan. 6, involves the removal of the existing IDOT pump station superstructure and constructing a new larger wet well and building south of the existing station, which will be repurposed into a grit collection chamber, according to IDOT representative Maria Castaneda.
The goal is to improve the sewer system along the I-290 corridor, which has experienced flooding over the years.
Although the pump station is technically on cemetery property, a temporary easement was provided by the cemetery to IDOT to work on this project, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021.
