Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in women. About one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Finding cancer early reduces the risk of dying from the disease. Mammograms don’t prevent cancer but they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible.
Women who live in the western suburbs of Oak Park, River Forest or Proviso Township can receive a mammogram for no cost at Rush Oak Park Hospital through the month of October. To qualify for a free screening it must be performed by Oct. 31, 2016. *
Participants must live in Oak Park, River Forest or Proviso Township, which includes Forest Park and 13 other villages. Proof of residence, including voter’s ID, utility bill or personal check will be requested at the time of your visit.
Experts at Rush recommend screening mammograms every year, beginning at age 40 for women who are not high-risk and earlier for those considered high risk. Rush radiologists specializing in breast imaging review digital mammograms, which can often show the subtle differences between healthy and abnormal tissues. Of all breast cancers detected at screening mammography at Rush, the vast majority are found at the earliest stages.
