Several charges were brought against two juveniles after an armed robbery at Thornton's, 601 Harlem Ave., on Jan. 8 at 1:14 a.m.

According to a press release from Deputy Chief Ken Gross of the Forest Park Police Department, two Forest Park police officers, who witnessed the armed robbery, approached the store at Thornton's.

A sixteen-year-old male, attempting to flee on foot, punched one of the officers in the face while trying to escape.

After a brief struggle, the offender was placed in custody. Police found a "large amount" of money on him, and a handgun he had discarded inside the store prior to his arrest was located. The pistol's serial number was defaced.

While placing the offender in custody, police observed a car fleeing southbound on Harlem Avenue without its headlights on, despite it being the middle of the night. The vehicle, which was found to have been reported stolen, headed eastbound on I-290. It was later located on the expressway around Laramie, where it had been in a single vehicle car accident.

Not long after, the driver, another sixteen-year-old male, was found hiding under a car in the vicinity of the accident. He was placed in custody, and a large amount of money was also found on him.

According to the release from the Forest Park Police Department, both juveniles were charged with armed robbery and resisting arrest. The juvenile in the store at Thornton's was also charged with aggravated battery and felony weapon offenses. Additional charges against the driver of the getaway vehicle include aggravated fleeing to elude and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
